At the end of 2024, Studio Weave, Tom Massey Studio, Wright & Wright Architects, Webb Yates and Daisy Froud won an international open competition to design new landscapes and welcome pavilions for the British Museum, the UK’s most visited public attraction, welcoming over 6.5 million visitors each year.
The project will transform the visitor experience at both entrances on Great Russell Street and Montague Place. Working closely with the Museum and local partners, the team will develop the designs, with the new pavilions and gardens expected to be in place by Spring 2027.
The proposal responds to the complexity of this historic site: re-designing the forecourt, improving accessibility and arrival, preserving the character of the Grade I listed buildings, and addressing the challenges of a changing climate while looking to the future of the institution.
New soft landscaping, punctuated with engaging installations, will trace two million years of human history through relationships between plants, objects and materials. The garden will invite curiosity and become a memorable highlight of every visit.
